In one of the most shocking upsets in boxing history, Andy Ruiz Jr. took down heavy favorite Anthony Joshua by way of a 7th round TKO. The previously unbeaten Joshua was easily the most popular boxer in the sport and as a result of the loss had to relinquish his IBF, WBA and WBO world title belts to Ruiz Jr. To make the fights result all the more shocking, this was Joshua’s much anticipated U.S debut, meant to establish his stardom outside of his home country of England.
Ruiz Jr. took the fight on extremely short notice after Joshua’s original opponent, Jarrell Miller, tested positive for performance enhancing drugs, only enhancing the David vs. Goliath narrative preached before the match. Nevertheless, this was an extremely entertaining fight and can only add to boxing’s popularity in the future.
